What to Wear!

Published by Misti Barbee

First and Foremost, BE YOU! This is the most important rule, you have to be comfortable in your own skin to take good photos.

Keep in mind, when picking clothing, what they will be used for. (ex. I want to hang family photos for display in my living room, I may want to coordinate our clothing choice with our decor!)

1. One Color

pick different shades of one color and sprinkle with accesories and different silhouettes. (ex. My husband looks best in his charcoal grey button up, so I would dress the children in coordinating shades, my daughter in a grey dress with pearls, my son in a black button up and cowboy hat, and myself in a light grey pencil skirt and white top.)

2. two or three different colors

If there are many members of your family, you might want to mix it up a bit more. Pick opposites of the color wheel for a pop, or colors right next to each other like blue and green. Pick outfits that have both of these colors so that everyone looks like a unit, or have boys in one color, girls in the the other, just have fun!

3. Don't be afraid of pattern

Photographers will sometimes tell clients to stay away from busy patterns, while this may be wise not to do in mass, don't feel like you can't wear your favorite shirt because it's too "loud." If one person in the photo wants to wear polka dots, the rest can balance it out with bold solids or simple stripes

4. Add some POP!

Wear soft simple colors, or neutrals with bright accessories. (ex. we're all wearing grey, BORING! So, I'll wear my great grandmother's orange rose brooch and I'll put a magenta flower on my daughter's head band. my son can even show the top of his "stove pipe" boots that happen to be turquoise!)

Another way to pop, you could all wear bright colors and stand against a muted background.

5. COLOR

just remember that color photographs much more beautifully than black and white, you don't want your family photos to be colorblind. It adds more depth to the photo itself and shows a bit of who you are. (this goes back to that pattern rule as well, just be you) A good photographer will make you look your best regardless of what you wear.

6. Consignment shopping

A very easy trick to get everyone looking amazing on a budget, (especially in the abilene area) go to consignment stores, or resale stores. Good will, salvation army, 6th street Savvy, Twice upon a time, etc.. there are many great places in town that can have you look great on a dime, and everyone can be a little more creative!
